Bulwer Plaza

This is my largest project to date. I was commissioned to paint Bulwer Plaza in North Perth. The most recognisable part of the mural is the portrait of Courtney Ugle on the side of it. Courtney Ugle is a proud Noongar woman, AFL player for Essendon and advocate against domestic violence. The rest of the building was covered in paintings of gum leaves and flowers, native orchids, birds, bees, butterflies and a native pigmy possum and redtailed phascogale.

Artist

Susan Respinger

Western Australia

Perth-based artist, Susan Respinger has been honing her skills in drawing and painting for most of her life. From a young age, Susan loved creating very detailed drawings on paper and playful, colourful paintings on large canvases.

In 2015 Susan made the leap from large canvas paintings to even larger mural paintings, pushing her work further into the public eye and providing her the opportunity to create pieces of art that interact with the surrounding environment. Amongst the extensive range of commercial projects Susan has completed, two of her most well-known are the native flora and fauna paintings and portrait of Courtney Ugle on the Bulwer Plaza building in North Perth and the portrait of Frida Kahlo on Stirling Highway in North Fremantle for the Mexican homewares and jewellery shop Plata Bonita.

One of the notable attributes of Susan’s work is the variety of different subject matter. She does not stick to one particular theme in her art. Instead, she explores extremely varied topics, always with an underlying tone of light-heartedness and fun.

When she’s not creating, you can find Susan immersing herself in Western Australia’s incredible natural coastline and outback. She has also been lucky enough to travel extensively overseas, opting to take the road less travelled and experiencing authentic culture in remote parts of the world. She draws inspiration from these adventures.
