The Portofino

Standing over two storeys tall, this bold fishing harbour scene beams through the old heritage-style open windowed walls of a first floor apartment. Her vivid blues can almost be seen from each end of Pakenham Street, reflecting off of the adjacent full length glass windows.

The wonderful client Bill wanted to capture a piece of the local Fremantle fishing industry, going about it’s atmospheric day-to-day activity. Growing up around the fishing harbours and wharfs in Scotland, he has a story to tell about every element of this painting, including the cormorants and seagulls.

Grab a coffee at #ghettoblastercafe across the road for a front row seat and take her all in. Bill will also happily accommodate viewing visits if you catch him.

10 days of painting, and 1 day of prep.
I had an absolute blast creating this, learnt some new perspectives, gained some muscle – I can wrangle scaffolding better than ever now. Thankful the rain mostly stayed away too.

Artist

Jody Ess

Western Australia

Jody Ess is a multi-faceted artist based in Fremantle WA.

Her signature painting styles capture a fusion of crude realism and abstract, with elements of animated grunge and street art. Specialising in large format canvasses and murals, her works feature heavy use of bold acrylics along with aerosols, inks, mixed media and repurposed materials.

Jody’s paintings are inspired by portraiture, urban culture, landscapes and nature. Her pieces generally feature figures and forms that emanate energy and magnetism; statements of outspoken and honest realities, and larger-than-life characters. They effectively captivate the spaces they occupy, and invite you in to celebrate beauty in the alternative, the unusual, the fun and the different. Every piece has a story to tell.

Growing up regionally in the mining town of Kalgoorlie, and living an on-the-go lifestyle around the country, Jody’s approach to art and life alike is resourceful, adaptable, hands-on and direct. You will currently find her on site around WA painting walls, or in her Fremantle Art Studio where her available works are all on display.
